There is little in the way of mental rest. Being a freelancer means never turning down work when offered. You don’t skip a gig because of vacation or anything like that, because you know that’s leaving money on the table. You can see the money burning in your head.

Bill Weir, CNN host, commenting on a Fox News “news report”: “Weather is not climate, you ignorant fucksticks“. Priceless.

I haven’t played bass much in the past couple of years, but I’m still very interested in vintage instruments. Here’s a great place to scratch the retro itch.

I have a 5-year-old son who hates losing. I don’t mean this as a compliment. He BLOWS at losing.

Drew Magary at Deadspin, writing about kids and competition:

This is competition as an institution, feeding itself at the expense of your kid’s enthusiasm. Sure, the kid will learn to hate everything, but at least she’ll be fucking competitive.

This accumulation of wealth and power is getting worse and worse and worse. So, the cost is the loss of our democracy and the loss of our liberties. This was the basic truth that previous generations of Americans understood.

From Free markets killed capitalism, an interview with Barry C. Lynn, on Salon. Fantastic reading.

Again, I’m disappointed but not surprised by the current Supreme Court and their decision to exempt Hobby Lobby from the Obamacare contraception mandate. Corporations are people, but women are not, apparently:

Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito wrote that the contraception rule “would put these merchants to a difficult choice: either give up the right to seek judicial protection of their religious liberty or forgo the benefits, available to their competitors, of operating as corporations.”

Right. So minimum-wage female employees have to find some other way of affording expensive birth control in order to keep working, lest they lose their jobs or dare to use all six weeks of their maternity leave.

I so want to do kite aerial photography, but I don’t have $100 to drop on a powerful enough kite yet. I can set up the rest of the gear pretty inexpensively, and with a GoPro tripod adapter, I think I can make some other cool stuff work too…

Well, this sucks: the Supreme Court rules against Aereo. I would have liked a digital TV antenna instead of a cable box. In more upbeat civil liberties news, they ruled that police must obtain a warrant before searching a cell phone.
