I don’t know that this actually explains what it says on the tin, but How QuarkXPress became a mere afterthought in publishing goes through some of the history of design workflows and outlines the differences between Quark and early versions of InDesign. Between 1897 and 1930, Henry Chapman Mercer, a gentleman anthropologist, set out to collect the handmade tools of everyday American life, just as industrialization was making these tools obsolete.
